Privacy policy
Effective November 5, 2026
The short version
- The app talks to no Clank RC server. We don't receive, store, or see your voice, messages, photos, or videos.
- The app sends what you say to your own Mac, over your Tailscale network. Your Mac turns it into text and speaks the replies, with speech models that run on the Mac.
- Your words go to your coding agent, such as a Claude Code session you run on that Mac. The Clank RC server itself calls no AI or speech service.
- No analytics, no advertising, no tracking, no third-party SDKs, no account.
- If you join the waitlist on this website, we keep your email and note to contact you about Clank RC limits, and delete them when you ask.
What Clank RC is
Clank RC is a voice remote for the coding agent on your own Mac. It has two pieces you run yourself: an iPhone and iPad app, and a small server on your Mac. Everything the app sends goes to your own Mac, at the address you pair with: you scan the code that clankrc setup shows, or type the address. The developer of Clank RC does not operate that server or any other service the app talks to.
On your phone
- Microphone. The app listens while it's on so you can talk hands-free, including with the screen locked. Sleep or mute turns listening off. When you finish speaking, it sends that recording to your Mac. The phone doesn't turn speech into text, and doesn't send audio anywhere else.
- Stored on the phone: the last 200 messages on screen, your Mac's address, an access code if you entered one, your settings (voice, speed, patience), and a random session ID. Deleting the app deletes them.
- Spoken replies are generated on your Mac and played on the phone, or use the iPhone's built-in voices.
- Notifications are created on the phone when a reply arrives in another chat. No push service is used.
- Photos and videos are read only when you pick, paste, or take one with the camera to send to a session. The camera is used only while you have it open.
From your phone to your Mac
The app connects only to the https address you paired with, which is your Mac's name on your Tailscale network. Tailscale encrypts this connection end to end between your devices. Tailscale's coordination service knows which of your devices are on your network, under Tailscale's privacy policy; it does not see your messages.
The app sends your Mac:
- A recording of each thing you say, so the Mac can turn it into text, and the text of what you type.
- Photos and videos you choose to send to a session.
- Your session ID, and which chat a message is for.
- Diagnostic events, such as "audio started" or an error code, with lengths and codes only. They never include what you said. They're written to a log on your Mac.
On your Mac
- Speech to text runs on the Mac with whisper.cpp. Recordings are transcribed in memory and not saved.
- Text to speech runs on the Mac with the Kokoro voice model. The reply text doesn't leave the Mac.
- Your coding agent gets the text of your messages and any photos and videos you send it. Pictures and videos it sends you go from your Mac to your phone the same way. Agents are programs you run, with their own settings, and they may send your messages to the AI provider they use, under that provider's terms and privacy policy.
The clankrc service keeps these in files only you can read, under ~/.clankrc/ in your home folder: messages in each session's chat, pictures and videos sent either way (deleted after 14 days), and usage counts, status codes and the diagnostic events above. Never what was said in the logs.
What we collect
Through the app, nothing. The app has no analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and doesn't track you across apps or websites. There's no Clank RC account. This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics.
The relay waitlist
The home page has a waitlist for higher limits on a relay we're building, which will let you pair without Tailscale. If you join it, we store:
- Your email address and the optional note about what you use Clank RC for. We use them only to contact you about Clank RC limits. We don't sell or share them, and we delete them when you ask.
- The time you joined, and a one-way hash of your IP address, used only to stop abuse by limiting how often one address can submit. We never store the IP address itself. Submission records used for that limit are deleted after a day.
The list is stored in a Cloudflare D1 database, and the site is served by Cloudflare, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. To be removed, email privacy@clankrc.com.
Children
Clank RC isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from children.
Your choices
- Delete the app to remove everything it stored on the phone.
- Delete the files in
~/.clankrc/, or run clankrc uninstall, to remove what's on your Mac.
- Email privacy@clankrc.com to be removed from the waitlist.
- Turn off microphone access in iOS Settings, Clank RC, at any time.
- For data your agent's AI provider holds, use that provider's account settings or contact them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
